Endless Discussion #1

Friday, 30 October 2015

Is blogging an easy thing ? a hard thing ? Can anyone do it ? My answer for all three questions is, Yes.

Book blogging, wait no, blogging in general, is a fun addictive hobbie. You can't stop blogging once you give it a try. It's a wonderful experience, knowing that someone,  from anywhere around the world, has read your thoughts about whatever topic you're writing about is actually exciting. I hope I am not the only one who gains this exhilarating thrill with the knowledge that people, actual human beings have read my blog post or better yet, have the courage to post a comment about their own thoughts making me feel awesome.

Viewers/Readers is basically the best part about blogging, because these people who continuously come to visit your beautiful site eventually become your close friends, people who you will grow to love. I kid you not, once you start blogging, you'll grow an audience who you'll basically adopt as your second family.

Blogging is easy, if the topic you're writing about is something that you are passionate about because the words just spill out of you, tumbling onto your computer screen. This however, to me, is the only easy part about blogging.

Blogging is hard as well. Hard in a sense of coming up with new content and having the time to write blog entries. As we speak, I'm slightly procrastinating by writing this article to avoid studying for my Geography exam that is in two days about Malaria and its effects in society. What I'm trying to say is that, realistically, if I wasn't procrastinating right now, I wouldn't have enough time in the day to actually sit down and focus purely on a blog post. I just can't. With being a senior student at high school, with random assignments and tests popping out of nowhere, no one in their right mind has the time to efficiently blog, study, eat, sleep and do extra things such as socialise and just having some 'me' time.

Blogging is also hard when you're over the stage of wanting to post more content. One day, you'll just wake up and you just feel the need to do anything other than blog and this is when you know your blogging 'honeymoon' is over and trying to blog after that will be one of the most energy demanding things ever.

My suggestion on trying to get through this stage is to do exactly what you're doing, don't blog. Have a 'leave'. Have some you time to yourself and continuously remind yourself why you started blogging in the first place and then EUREKA*, you'll eventually find yourself blogging happily again.

Now, lastly, to answer the last question, yes, of course, anyone can start blogging, it's just up to you on what you blog about. I've interacted with people who have just graduated or are still in primary school who blog about their favourite foods, games and so on. I interacted with different people from all over the world who also blog about my love for books. The blogging community is diverse. The book blogging community is diverse and having you become an addition of the community would be an honour. So don't be afraid and don't you dare hide your greatness and your genius thoughts from us and start blogging today.

*must yell this word out when read.... please... pretty please with some gooey chocolate chip Subway cookies on top ?

Top Ten Tuesday #5

Tuesday, 27 October 2015

The time is nearly here, for us to rejoice and cheer, for it is time my kings and queens, for us to celebrate (with candy) Halloween.

So for this week's Top Ten Tuesday, I thought I'd make a list of my Halloween TBR, so basically ten books that we should read on Halloween.

The first and most exciting book to read on a cold and dark Halloween is:

The Diviners by Libba Bray

This gorgeous book has been on my TBR for only a few weeks after I was sent the review copy of the sequel, Lair of Dreams. I really had no clue that Lair of Dreams was a sequel but after reading the synopsis of the first book, The Diviners, I've been needing it in my life.

The Diviners seems extremely dark and just a sneaky thriller that looks innocent by it's cover but it really isn't.

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon

Okay, I must admit I have not read the synopsis for this book... and I shall try to resist reading it now. I'd really like to go blind into reading this book. I'm guessing it's kind of a not too terrifying read but more of a dark fantasy one ? I will never know until I read it.Also Australians ! It's $5 for the hardcover edition at Basement Books !

Demon Road by Derek Landy

My good people, I have only read half of this book... and then I put it down and forgot to pick it up again. This book is deliciously gruesome with some amazing deep and dark characters. I'd actually love it if I could finish this on Halloween because what is Halloween without being scared for your life?

The Young Elites by Marie Lu

The Young Elites (The Young Elites, #1)

This wonderful book was one of my book club, The Bibliphiles, book of the month. I never got my copy in time to read it, so it's on my TBR.

The Murder Complex by Lindsay Cummings

The Murder Complex (The Murder Complex, #1)

If you haven't figured out why it's on my TBR list... read the title again. It practically screams out "Read me on Halloween and prepare to die from your own fear MWAHAHAHA".

Half Bad by Sally Green

Half Bad (The Half Bad Trilogy, #1)

The book's title has 'Bad' in it. It's obviously evil right ?

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

Illuminae (The Illuminae Files, #1)

because why not ?

Magnus Chase by Rick Riordan

The Sword of Summer (Magnus Chase and The Gods of Asgard, #1)

Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer is on my Halloween tbr because I'm missing out on the "OMG WHAT IS LIFE" train right now and I want to join.

The Death Sculptor by Chris Carter

The Death Sculptor (Robert Hunter, #4)

Is it ten already ? Yes ? No ? can't be bothered to count ? same.

Alice in Zombieland by Gena Showalter

Alice in Zombieland (White Rabbit Chronicles, #1)

Just because it has the noun Zombie must mean it should be a creepy, so I'm adding it to my to read pile on Halloween.

So that's my hetic list of books I'd love to read on Halloween. What will you be planning on reading ? Or better yet eating : Candy or Cake ?

Ice like Fire is the sequel to the epic Snow Like Ashes book. The review to this book can be found here.

Goodreads Synopsis:

It’s been three months since the Winterians were freed and Spring’s king, Angra, disappeared—thanks largely to the help of Cordell.

Meira just wants her people to be safe. When Cordellan debt forces the Winterians to dig their mines for payment, they unearth something powerful and possibly dangerous: Primoria’s lost chasm of magic. Theron sees this find as an opportunity—with this much magic, the world can finally stand against threats like Angra. But Meira fears the danger the chasm poses—the last time the world had access to so much magic, it spawned the Decay. So when the king of Cordell orders the two on a mission across the kingdoms of Primoria to discover the chasm’s secrets, Meira plans to use the trip to garner support to keep the chasm shut and Winter safe—even if it means clashing with Theron. But can she do so without endangering the people she loves?

Mather just wants to be free. The horrors inflicted on the Winterians hang fresh and raw in Januari—leaving Winter vulnerable to Cordell’s growing oppression. When Meira leaves to search for allies, he decides to take Winter’s security into his own hands. Can he rebuild his broken kingdom and protect them from new threats?

As the web of power and deception weaves tighter, Theron fights for magic, Mather fights for freedom—and Meira starts to wonder if she should be fighting not just for Winter, but for the world

My Thoughts:

Oh my ... I am lost for words. This sequel has been one of the most epic, devastatingly heartbreaking and delicious reads of 2015. May I just quickly take a moment now to thank the publishing house, Harper Collins for providing a early copy for me. Like this book has literally changed my views on fantasy all together. I don't want to scare everyone entirely on it's greatness, so I'll sum it up in 5 simple reasons why Ice Like Fire should be your next read.

1. If you think Snow Like Ashes was epic, think again. Ice Like Fire basically defines the word epic. So many events happen in this book that may leave you crying, slowly dying with your OTP's frying. Yes, questions such as, "Does he/she really deserve her/his love?", "Is he/she really stupid ?", "I believe in you, do you?" and the classic "Do you wanna die or are you going to be a good little character and love the other character?". I walked away from this book with so many new OTPs that it's ridiculous. I'm also #TeamMather now... Also, you'll walk away wanting to hug your Mother and Brothers more often and force them to love you.

2. The world building in the book was spectacular becoming more detailed with Meira visiting different lands which has gorgeous imagery. I myself enjoyed all the details Sara made for each kingdom. It was like I was in each land myself, touching and feeling everything, enjoying the laughs people had in Summer, wanting to expand my own knowledge like the people of Yakim and wanting to explore my art like the people in Ventralli. Each kingdom's description was glorious and just breathtaking. I wish the world Sara created was real. All of you need to read it to experience my need for this world to exist.

May I also add that I loved the lullaby that was implemented into the book. It is so beautiful that I sing it now and again. Here are the lyrics if you're wondering.

Lay your head upon the snow. Lay your sorrow in the ice.
For all that once was calm, sweet child, will belong to you tonight.
Lay your heart upon the snow. Lay your tears in the ice.
For all that once was still, sweet child, will belong to you tonight.

*Inserts a million tears on how much this lullaby hurts*

3. New characters - Ice Like Fire introduces so many new characters with some being the definition of evil and some just as mysterious. But one character you guys would not want to miss out on is the kickass Summerian, Ceridwen. She's abit older than Meira, but in every way, Ceridwen is just like Meira, just a tad bit more feisty. She's a wonderful addition into the world Primoria.

Also the boys and girl Mather befriends are also classic dudes (especially Phil) who I can totally see myself being friends with too. These boys and girl form The Children of the Thaw with Mather. These wonderful new characters in this kickass group are Trace, Hollis, Phil, Kiefer, Eli and Feige, who "Throw(s) insults and truths with more accuracy than any adult" earning her the nickname ghost.

The supply of new characters was bountiful making me want to explore Sara's world more, to gain more knowledge on who these people really are. That is why you need to read it. To explore the new characters and hack away their shells to expose their souls.

4. Point of views. That's right guys more than one point of view. We finally get to see what Mather thinks. Mather's POV is written in third person where as Meira's is in first. This sounds very confusing and something that some people would find very uncomfortable to read because of the switching of the different types of writing but Sara writes Ice Like Fire in a way both POV's compliment each other making it a breeze to read.

5. Lastly, the feels. You need to read this book so you can suffer the same feels that I have been suffering from, like forever. Moments that crushed me include when Theron said
I'll always fight for you. I'll always keep you safe
There is still an us... There will always be an us

 or when Meira said
I'll play along, you arrogant pig. I'll pretend to be an obedient little queen until I can crush you
I'd choose you if it wouldn't unravel who I need to be
I'm not just me anymore. I'm a whole kingdom, and I can't make mistakes.
Like there is so many emotions this book plays with. I can't even even. Just ugh. Someone please read it and talk to me about it, cause it's breaking my heart.

So there it is guys, the five reasons you should pick up Ice Like Fire. If my review (that has taken me 3 days to write because I didn't want to leave anything out... and because I'm extremely sick) hasn't convince you, then my rating should.

The Verdict:

Ice Like Fire was an addictive read, containing all the right ingredients producing an epic fantasy novel that will linger in your thoughts even after finishing the book. My rating for this book is illogical but Ice Like Fire has deserved each book rating. I have awarded Ice Like Fire with 7  out of 5 books. Thanks Sara for writing a novel that I have reread more times than I have fingers and toes. You are genius and I cannot wait to see what you have install for us in the last book... *cries* I can't believe it's happening. The trilogy is ending.

Winterians Assemble !

Winterians Assemble !

So after a very late notice of this actually existing, I've decided to enter Sara Raasch Autumn competition, Join the Blizzard ! I've basically had a day and a bit to create my entries because I was getting ready to go back to school (which was today and it was very very hot... I think it was 36 degrees), studying to remember content before going back to school and contemplating about my future... because University Applications for early birds are closed but luckily, I applied and don't have to pay triple to what the original price was. But yeah, I'll stop rambling about that and get to my entries.

Just to let you know, I am not a skilled artist (lol) or graphics designer (one day I'll be, one day... obviously self taught that is). I have my own way of seeing art. To complete my creations for the competition in the short amount of time that I had, I was given a list of challenges from friends. The challenges were fun ! I never expected it to be fun because I was utterly terrified that I'd analyse my work too much then throw it away. I'm glad I have awesome friends who have given challenges that made me laugh and love my own pieces of art.

The very first challenge was draw something in 30 seconds ! and man was I panicking. This was the challenge I was most scared of... because I knew deep down I would fail haha. But I like how it turned out, because it was only a 30 second drawing. So here it is below, a drawing of the adorable Theron... I tried guys ahaha

Then next challenge was also a time challenge ! I had two minutes to draw a character from Ice Like Fire and I wasn't allowed to lift my pencil. This challenge required so much effort because to hide that you didn't lift your pencil, you had to press on the paper real lightly so it wouldn't look like big scribbles everywhere. Here's my challenge #2 artwork of Meira.

Challenge #3 was draw an outline of a character and colour it in.. multiply times ! So I drew the outline of the swoon worthy Theron

Then I printed out two copies to colour them in differently... I used watercolours for this challenge (Just a fair warning... no matter how I take these photos, these images can never define how beautiful these watercolour pieces are) I've also included two pictures of the red version because I so wanted you all to see my blending technique that was happening in half the drawing on the robe but my hands shadow is covering it.. the second image you can kind of see the ripples of the robe.

Challenge #4 was Make me Feel Feels.. and I had 15 minutes to complete it and here is a sad Meira.... This is my favourite watercolour piece I have ever created... you all need to see it in person because as I said before the water colour images do not give the picture enough credit on how beautiful it really is !

Up Next are my graphic designs ... which I will eventually make into iphone wallpapers making it available for everyone to download. But before I show you those here's a link to my previous wallpaper designs... which I also would like to enter into the competition! Just click the previous link and you'll find the page. Playing with photos is very addictive but I've tried to cut down on the number of graphics I was entering and decided to enter these 3 below !

To end my competition entry... you may have noticed that I haven't really well, included much content from Ice Like Fire in my entries, this is because I cannot give away spoilers in any shape or form because I've actually read Ice Like Fire. It was super hard not to include some epic quotes from the book in my entries but I just couldn't. But I could however pick quotes from the first 100 pages because it was available to the public (which I also found out about only a day and a half ago). So enjoy ! .. before I become super anxious about my drawings and delete them ahaha.

Oh and Thanks so much for the opportunity Sara ! Made my night when I found out about the competition !

Now I dare you guys to complete the same challenges I have ! Go!

Ten Reasons Why I Quit on Lending Books Out

I love books, you love books, that's the reason why you're reading this. We have something in common. I use to share my love of books regularly by letting friends and family borrow out my books, because who am I to say no to someone who wants to experience the same love I have for books; who am I to say no to someone who wants to escape reality via books; who am I to say no to someone who want can't afford books. But now I know who I am... A Hero ! Protecting my books is like second nature so not seeing other people apply that toward my books hurt.

So here a a 10 Reasons why I've quit on lending books out and proclaimed myself as the Wonder Bibliophile (and yes that is my delightful superhero name)

Reason 1:

Because my books become water damaged. That's right folks, every time I've handed a book out, those precious babies come back to me wet... or just soaked in a mysterious liquid that I'd personally like to keep mysterious.

Reason 2:

People never give them back. Like. Never. I still have 3 books that I can remember off the top of my head that have been loaned ages ago and still haven't gotten them back.

Reason 3:

Friends lose them. I don't even know how that's possible, if you're taking a 25cm hardcover book that's orange, Ebony... Like come on.

Reason 4:

Here in Australia, books are expensive at bookstores. Like one paperback can cost someone $16-$20 with the hardcover versions ranging from $25 to $45. Books are cheaper online and at big chain stores, but they have a smaller range of books plus, bookstores are easier for me to get my supply of books because I don't have to wait for delivery and I can actually read the first two pages to see if it's interesting. So if you ask for a book I'll be like

Because I don't want to waste $40.

Reason 5:

I currently don't have a job :(. I've been busy as it's my senior year so I've had no 'social' life. My senior co-ordinator said there are three lives you have in senior year, social, study & personal. One of them shall die. So I killed my social life. Thus meaning I couldn't get a job in turn earning money which would have meant I'd have spare cash to buy books (or replace them). Plus having a job collided with so many things right now and I just couldn't risk it.

Reason 6:

People doggy ear my books..... I don't hate, but I dislike doggy ears. It irritates the heck out of me. Like no, I did not save up change from every small ayran from the last 3 weeks to buy a precious gorgeous book for over $20 to have them doggy eared. no. You shall no pass... into my room and grab a book.

Reason 7:

People don't understand that I do not like bent covers. People throw my books into their bags and then take them out all scrunched up like they've been through a war within the bag. Like, be responsible and take care of my book/s please.

Reason 8:

This has only happened once... but I shall never forget. I shall talk you all through my traumatic experience. I bought a book. On the same day, a friend asked to read it during school. I said yes. When she returned it I read it that afternoon. I was reading it for a while until I was nearly finished and I turned to the last page... and there was no last page. The page was ripped out... Gone. Like it never existed. The next day, my friend, never existed to me.... lol but no, she said she accidentally wet it, and ripped it out to dry and then forgot to tape it back in... I honestly laughed the situation off because it was so ridiculous... We ended up taping my book back together.

Reason 9:

Because some people will hate my OTPs... and then I shall never give them a book again... because I shall hate them for it MWAHAHAHA

Reason 10:

When I let someone borrow a book... they sometimes let someone else borrow the book and then it's this never ending cycle on who has my books ??

So, that's my crazy list on why I've quit on lending books out.... for now.

Comment below if you can feel my pain.
